Focus Group Test
The people asked overwhelmingly preferred the portrait poster, so I intend to go with that. This will mean getting a portrait photograph of the main two protagonists stood outside of the college building.
TV Poster Analysis
Merlin Poster
The dominant signifiers on the Merlin poster
are Merlin himself and Arthur. Merlin is holding out his hand to the audience.
This connotes his use of magic within the text but also creates an enigma code
as to what he is holding out his hand for. He is stood in a dominant position, giving
direct mode of address. This connotes his dominant role in the text.
Arthur is stood behind Merlin, showing his
role as less of a main character. He is, however, in a very dominant position
and is placed above Merlin. This shows his dominance and higher rank over
Merlin. He is dressed in chainmail and is holding a sword; this connotes his
role as a knight of the round table. It also shows his role as a hero in the
text.
In the background you can see a dragon. This
is typical of the fantasy genre and would also act as an enigma code as people
may well ask what a dragon is doing there. Also seen in the background around the
dragon are dark clouds. This is an indexical link to dark times and is a
typical signifier used by the fantasy genre. However, there are gaps in the
clouds where you can see blue sky, and this is a signifier for the hope that is
represented by Merlin and Arthur. Also in the background you can see what looks
like smoking houses, and the smoke coming from the chimneys is an indexical
link to habitation. Smoke is also an indexical link to fire and represents the
lives of the families of Camelot being destroyed by the destiny mentioned in
the text.
There is text on the poster saying ‘You can’t
escape destiny’. This creates an enigma code as you want to know what destiny
they cannot escape. This also begs the question of who cannot escape destiny;
the characters or the audience.
The dominant signifier of the poster is
Sherlock Holmes. He is stood in a confrontational and dominant position that
signifies his dominant role in the text as the hero. He gives the audience
direct mode of address which shows his confrontational nature. He wears dark
colours that create a sense of mystery about him and thus an enigma code. He
wears a long coat which carries connotations of detectives through the cultural
knowledge of the audience. This shows his love for his chosen profession and
also tells the audience what kind of programme it is going to be. However, he
also wears a ratty blue scarf around his neck. This shows his less conventional
approach to his work as it is unusual for detectives to wear scarves and is
quite a casual piece of clothing. Sherlock is not smiling, but is instead
giving the audience a brooding sort of stare. This creates the enigma code as
to what he is thinking.
In the background can be seen a typical
London street. You can tell it is a typical street as you can see Carphone
Warehouse in the background, a typical electronics chain store. Also there can
be seen people in the background. This gives a setting to the picture and adds regionality
to the text.
There is an overwhelming theme of dark
colours all across the whole picture. This has connotations of the mysterious
and also is typical of the genre as murder is often involved with detective
programmes. There is, however, a bright sky in the background connoting ‘the
light at the end of the tunnel’. This light is also around Sherlock’s head,
telling us that he is this ‘light’ at the end of the tunnel for his clients.
There is a BBC logo in the top corner and
this brings prestige as the BBC is renowned for its drama. Also bringing
prestige is the subtext reading ‘Benedict Cumberbatch in’ as Benedict is a well-known
and celebrated actor and is known to be able to play moody characters very
well.
The font of the text on the poster is very
masculine, with a lot of sharp edges and no fanciness to it. This shows the
masculine nature of the programme and thus it’s audience, though it does appeal
to both sexes.
The dominant signifier on the page is a photo
of The Doctor. There are no other people present on the poster, and this shows
his role as hero in the text. He is stood in a very dominant position, stood
with his arms out and at his full height. He is wearing a tweed suit which is
typical of his character and shows his extravagance. He is looking off the side
of the poster, creating an enigma code as to what he is looking at. His general
body position is very protective, like he is protecting the audience from what is
about to come. He holds out his sonic screwdriver which fans of the show will
know to be his all-purpose tool. The green light emanating from the screwdriver
suggests it is being used, and this, to fans of the show, connotes danger. The
Doctor is overwhelmingly in dark or black, and this connotes a dark character
with a dark past.
The whole poster has a very dark colour
scheme, and is overwhelmingly black. This connotes danger and mystery and a
darker storyline. It also creates an enigma code as there is tantalisingly
little the audience can actually see.
Seen in the background are cloudy skies. Cloudy
skies usually connote trouble. There are no breaks in the cloud, again creating
a mystery as to what the trouble will be. Also seen in the background is an
unknown landscape. This creates the enigma code of where The Doctor is and what
he is doing there.
The Doctor Who logo can be seen at the top of
the poster. This brings with it prestige and high production values as Doctor Who
is a well-known and long running Sci-Fi drama that has a very good reputation.
The font is very masculine and this shows the drama of the programme.

Focus Group Test
The Focus Group universally preferred the second sketch, which I intend to go with. Some did, however, suggest that rather than a photo of case notes, just pictures of the main characters in screenshots from the series may be better. Also, that just Arthur on the front would be a nice idea. I will incorporate these into my DVD cover design.

TV DVD Cover Analaysis
Doctor Who Complete Series 1 DVD Cover
On the front of the Doctor Who Complete
Series 1 DVD Cover, there are two dominant signifiers. The first contains an
image of The Doctor and his companion, Rose Tyler. This is a mid-shot, and we
are on level with the characters connoting that we are on a similar level with
the characters, and that they are our friends. The Doctor is stood in a
dominant, highly masculine, almost confrontational position. This shows that he
is the hero in the text. Rose, however, is stood in a much less confrontational
position, her body turned sideways so to make her look smaller. She is also
leaning on The Doctor, suggesting her role is of more of a companion or even
possibly the princess in the story. Both are giving us direct mode of address,
and thus connecting with the watcher. The Doctor wear mainly black, adding
mystery to his character, where Rose is wearing much lighter colours suggesting
she is a more relatable character.
The second dominant signifier is of three monsters from the series. They are set in a darker light to represent their dark intentions and are below the main protagonists, suggesting that they are below them in society as well. Each of the monsters has a less-than-human appearance and, due to lighting, their strange features are highlighted. This signifies their mutated hearts and their alien greed for things that they cannot have.
The second dominant signifier is of three monsters from the series. Each of the monsters has a less-than-human appearance and, due to lighting, their strange features are highlighted. This signifies their mutated hearts and their alien greed for things that they cannot have.
The series symbol is placed in the centre of
the page. It has a very masculine font, connoting the fast paced, action based
premise of the programme. The subtitle is also a very masculine font, but is a
little more off-centre. This shows the unconventional nature of the programme.
In the background to the front cover it shows
the backdrop to the TARDIS, which if you were to have seen the programme you
would have recognised. The whole cover is set in a red light and this has an
indexical link to danger. This theme carries on to the next page over the image
there.
Sherlock Complete Series 2 DVD Cover
The dominant signifier on the front cover of
the Sherlock Complete Series 2 DVD Cover is a photograph of Sherlock Holmes and
John Watson. Sherlock is dressed in a long coat, suit and scarf. A long coat is
an indexical link to detectives, and this is shown in the actual text as well.
His suit connotes a more professional nature to his work but the scarf
indicates that he puts his own twist on what he considers to be his job. John
however is dressed more informally. He is dressed in a shirt and jacket and
this connotes his more relaxed approach to what he has been roped into. John is
wearing relatively light colours, especially compared to Sherlock, which
connotes to his somewhat less dark mind. Sherlock is stood in a very dominant
position, in front of John and striding forward. This signifies his role as the
main protagonist and hero of the series, which is further suggested by his
direct mode of address. John, though in a very similar position, is stood
behind Sherlock and is smiling at the camera. This all connotes his role as the
sidekick in the series.
Also seen on the front cover are the almost
ghostly images of Jim Moriarty and Irene Adler. Jim is staring directly at the
audience in an almost threatening manner, and this shows his role as the
villain in the text. Irene, however, is looking more seductively or secretly at
the audience. This creates the enigma code as the audience will want to know
what she is hiding. Their faded appearance is an indexical link to ghosts,
which themselves connote fear and the supernatural.
The words on the front cover, stating
‘Sherlock’ and ‘Complete Series Two’, are in a very masculine font, suggesting
that is a masculine text. Masculine fonts are used throughout the cover.
The back cover uses similar dark tones as the
front to connote a dark storyline or characters. There are the black and while,
almost transparent images of Sherlock, John and Jim. Their ghostly appearance
creates an enigma code and thus making the audience want to know what the
mysterious characters may be hiding. John is sat in a relatively informal
position, holding a newspaper. This agai9n suggests his relatively relaxed
approach to the whole situation. Sherlock is playing his violin, which shows
his eccentricity and suggests he may not be your typical protagonist. Jim is
stood looking at the audience from a sideways position. This body position suggests
he has something to hide and creates another enigma code.
The BBC logo is placed on every side of the
DVD cover. The BBC logo brings prestige to the DVD as the BBC typically creates
good programmes. There is also a recommendation from Caitlin Moran, who works
for The Times. The Times also brings prestige as it is a long standing and
traditionally straight-talking broadsheet newspaper.
NCIS Complete Season 5 DVD Cover
The dominant signifier on the front cover is
a large image of Gibbs. He is stood in a dominant position, in front of all of
his co-workers, even those ranked above him. This signifies his role as the
lead protagonist and hero. He is dressed in a suit and this connotes that the
text is based around his profession, and that he takes it seriously. However,
he is not wearing a tie and the top button on his shirt is undone. This
connotes that, while he takes his work seriously, he can be relaxed about
certain things. He is giving direct mode of address and this also shows his
dominance in the show. He is smiling at the audience, though not a full beaming
smile, more of a smirk. This suggests that he knows something that you do not,
and creates an enigma code.
Behind him are stood Ziva DaVid and Director
Shepard, behind whom stands Ducky and Tony DiNozzo, who behind stands Abby
Sciuto and Timothy McGee. All of these are main characters in the text. All are
stood in relatively dominant positions, but all are placed behind Gibbs. This
shows that, in terms of the characters, they are below him (though this is not
necessarily true in the storyline). Most give direct mode of address to the
audience, and those who do not are looking off into the distance, creating an
enigma code.
The NCIS logo is in a very masculine font,
and this shows the masculine nature of the text and the male-dominated target
audience. There are no feminine fonts on the DVD cover, again demonstrating the
male target audience and the very masculine storylines throughout the text.
On the back of the DVD cover you can see
several shots from the episodes contained within the box set. This creates
several enigma codes as, if you have not seen the episodes, you will want to
know what is going on in the various action shots or by the various expressions
shown on the character’s faces.
On the side of the box you can see the CBS
logo and the Paramount logo, which both carry prestige.

SEBASTIAN
Have we got any idea who’s been
behind it
all this time?
At all?
Arthur sighs and shuffles the notes around on the
desk.
ARTHUR
Not as
such…
There is an uncomfortable silence between the two.
SEBASTIAN
Let’s go
over it again…
Arthur groans but satisfies Sebastian regardless.

END OF FLASHBACKS
There is a pregnant pause. Roxie looks up from her
phone at last.
SEBASTIAN
But we
still don’t know
who’s
behind it all.
Arthur pushes his notes off the desk in frustration
and leans on it breathing heavily.
EXT.
COLLEGE COURTYARD – LUNCH
Sebastian is waiting for Arthur, tapping his foot but
otherwise patient. Arthur bursts through the doors, composing himself as he
walks, and lets his eyes roll to Sebastian as he draws near.
SEBASTIAN
Arthur!
Arthur walks over to Sebastian and sighs. Sebastian
glances at Arthur's face before opening his mouth to say something, thinking
better of it, and shutting it again.
ARTHUR
What,
Sebastian?
SEBASTIAN
We haven't
had a single clue
as to who
is really behind this...
Arthur stays silent, watching Sebastian.
SEBASTIAN
What if we never
catch them,
Arthur? What if
they're too clever
for us? Don't look at
me like that,
it's possible!
Arthur shakes his head disapprovingly as Roxie walks
in, abnormally pleased to see them, as always.
ROXIE
Seb!
Arthur!
Arthur again rolls his eyes. Sebastian looks genuinely
pleased.
SEBASTIAN
Roxie!
Roxie enthusiastically sits down next to them, even
more so than before. She's being overly nice, obviously so.
SEBASTIAN
You alright, Roxie?
ROXIE
Yep! Perfectly fine,
thank
you! How're you, Seb?
SEBASTIAN
Oh, I'm-
ARTHUR
Busy. We're busy. We
have a
thief to catch.
Arthur gets up and leaves, Sebastian shrugs at ROXIE
then leaves as well. Roxie lingers for a moment before following herself.
INT. LARGE
CLASSROOM – EARLY AFTERNOON
LARGE CLASSROOM with computers around the edge,
horse-shoe arranged desks. Arthur has pictures set out to one end; he's
standing over them, looking determined. Sebastian is stood nearby, looking
vaguely confused. Roxie leans by the door, checking her phone and occasionally
glancing at Sebastian.
Arthur sighs loudly and looks up at Sebastian. You
can’t see Arthur’s face, but you can hear him muttering something to Sebastian.
Sebastian looks shocked, disbelieving, and glances slightly at Roxie. Roxie
looks up, confused.
Roxie starts walking toward Arthur and Sebastian.
Hearing snippets of the conversation, Roxie is looking more and more worried
about what they’re talking about. The conversation suddenly ends just as she
comes into earshot, but she still hears
SEBASTIAN
No, it couldn’t be!
They
wouldn’t! They-
Arthur spins around and shuffles his papers away
behind his back. He stands up and leaves, hitting Roxie with his shoulder as he
passes.
ARTHUR
[half-hearted]
Sorry
Arthur leaves the room but Sebastian stays.
ROXIE
Seb? What
was that all about?
SEBASTIAN
Don’t
worry about it, Roxie.
It’s just
a lead.
Sebastian leaves, Roxie sits on the desk and sighs
audibly.
INT. EMPTY CORRIDOR – MID AFTERNOON
THIEF dressing in black hoodie, hood up and head down,
rushes around a corner. They are dressed all in black, hood up, running at full
pelt. You can’t see their face in the short time you can see them on screen. Arthur
rushes around the corner in obvious pursuit. His coat is splaying out behind
him.
The Thief has a wallet clasped in their hand, and as
they go through a doorway, attempts to slam a door in Arthur’s face. Arthur
pushes through regardless, concentration showing on his face.
The Thief slams into a student, pushing him into
Arthur’s way as they continue to run down the corridors.
A rumbling is heard from the classrooms and Arthur
quickly checks his watch; class was about to end. This only increases Arthur’s
determination to catch the Thief and he shows no signs of slowing down.
Suddenly, students burst from the classrooms around
them, blocking the Thief temporarily from sight. Arthur pushes students out of
the way as he narrows the Thief’s lead, and shouts of discontent follow them
down the corridor. The Thief becomes more frantic as they realize Arthur is
catching up.
Sebastian leaves his History class and is nearly
knocked down by the Thief
SEBASTIAN
[shocked]
What?
Sebastian is then pushed out of the way by Arthur
SEBASTIAN
[shocked,
flustered]
Arthur, what?
Sebastian then joins the chase, thought he is
obviously confused. He trails somewhat behind Arthur and apologizes to the
students being pushed out of the way.
The chase continues toward the staircase. Teachers and
students alike are now following in confusion. Sebastian is behind, trying to
keep up with Arthur.
Sweat trickles down Arthur’s face as the Thief crashes
through the door to the stairwell.
INT. STAIRWELL – MID AFTERNOON
Large STAIRWELL with helical concrete stairs, As soon
as the door to the stairwell swings shut, Arthur bursts through, closely
followed by Sebastian and a group of teachers and students.
The Thief is running erratically and stumbles, falling
down the stairs. The Thief shouts out in pain. Arthur stops at the top of the
stairs, soon joined by Sebastian, and waits as the Thief finishes tumbling.
There is a moment of silence as the Thief lies on the
landing. Arthur skips down the stairs and carefully removes the wallet from
their hand. He throws it up to Sebastian who clumsily catches it. Arthur
reaches into an inside pocket of the hoody and pulls out the concert tickets.
He pockets them before pausing, as if thinking about what to do.
Arthur begins making his way up the stairs, but as he
leaves quickly pulls the hood of the Thief down. Under the hood is Roxie,
trying to hide her face.
Arthur continues up the stairs, steely determination
on his face. Sebastian looks shocked and disgusted.
INT. CLASSROOM – LATE AFTERNOON
CLASSROOM is made out to look very similar to a police
interview room, with single desk and low lighting. Roxie is sat there, there is
a TEACHER mid 30s dressed smartly, by the door.
ROXIE
I want to talk to
Arthur and
Sebastian! Please! I need
to
explain!
TEACHER
You are in
no place to be making demands!
Arthur and Sebastian enter; Arthur is, as usual,
devoid of much emotion. Sebastian looks betrayed.
ROXIE
Look, Seb,
let me explain!
SEBASTIAN
You don’t
need to. Arthur already has.
Roxie looks disgruntled upon hearing this.
ARTHUR
Yes, Roxie. I
explained to Sebastian
that you did this
because you never got
the attention you wanted.
Not from your
parents, not from
your teachers and
especially not from
your peers. You saw me,
the genius that I am,
getting recognition
and attention, and
you were jealous.
Arthur smiles
ARTHUR
You are far more
perfect than me.
Not just clever, but also
charismatic,
witty and likeable.
So you latched
onto me, thinking if
you could outsmart
me, maybe you’d get
the credit you so
dearly deserve. But
there is one thing
I don’t understand… you
knew that to
outsmart me was not
to get caught, yet
you still expected
credit? You’re a
smart girl, Roxie…
Roxie looks at Arthur in disbelief then sighs.
ROXIE
You wouldn’t
understand, Arthur.
I did it for a reason
I’ve come to
think beyond your
scope of knowledge.
I didn’t do it for
your attention, or
the attention of my
friends, or teachers,
or parents. I don’t
care about them!
I only care about…
Roxie looks at Sebastian. Arthur looks shocked,
Sebastian just looks at his feet.
ROXIE
Seb,
listen to me, please, Sebastian!
Sebastian refuses to look at Roxie, but she goes on
anyway.
ROXIE
Sebastian, just
listen to me.
I thought that, if I outsmarted
Arthur,
maybe you wouldn’t
think he was so
invincible… so
amazing, maybe you’d
pay attention to me.
He can be outsmarted,
I know he can. Look,
Seb, please,
I did it for you!
Sebastian just looks at the ground. Arthur is a little
dumbfounded.
SEBASTIAN
[quietly]
Did you
really think that would
work, Rox?
Really?
ARTHUR
You… You
did it for him? But, I
don’t
understand…
ROXIE
You never do, Arthur!
You don’t
understand emotion - that
much
I’ve gathered. Do you
even feel
real emotions,
Arthur? Truly? Or
are you just… just
all logic, like…
like what? A machine?
You certainly
don’t act with any
compassion. Did
you never question
the motives of
the people I hired?
Did you?
Arthur is a little dumbfounded, shocked into silence
by her words.
ROXIE
Helen, for example! I
promised
her that I would see
to it she
would get the
attention of her
crush if she did what
I asked!
The Teacher pays closer attention to this.
ROXIE
Laura, another fine
example! She
didn’t do it for her
own personal
gain, not at all! She
did it
because her brother
desperately
needed pain relief – strong
pain
relief – that
the doctors couldn’t
give him because they
didn’t know
the cause. I promised
her that if
she did what I asked,
I could provide
that. If she didn’t
get caught, that is.
ROXIE (CONT’D)
All of them had other
motives!
None of them selfish,
just me
who prayed on them!
Arthur and
Sebastian stand in silence, dumbstruck while Roxie rants.
ROXIE (CONT’D)
But you don’t care
about that,
do you? You just care
about getting
your man, sealing
your victory,
catching the bad guy…
Arthur stays silent. He seems to have lost his steam.
Sebastian is looking from one to the other, assessing the situation.
ROXIE
You know what,
Arthur? You really
aren’t that good at
this detective
rubbish you pretend
to be an expert at.
Without me, without
Seb, you would be
nothing. Nothing at
all. You realize that…
don’t you?
Arthur is silent, examining his feet. Roxie laughs to
herself, hysterical.
ROXIE
You do! You know all
this! You’ve
known for a while… Not
from the
start, that’s for
sure, but for a
while. Then… why
haven’t you tried
to prove yourself
wrong? Come on,
Arthur. Every time
you find a limit,
you push it until it
breaks. It’s
how you live. I think
it gives you
a buzz, to push
yourself until you
break. So… why
not now?
Arthur glances slightly up at Sebastian. When this
happens, Roxie laughs but Sebastian smiles, just a little.
ROXIE
Haha, no,
Arthur. Just no.
You don’t
understand emotion!
You’ll
never get anywhere!
ARTHUR
You don’t
understand me.
Arthur leaves in a huff, Sebastian stays for just a
moment.
SEBASTIAN
I’m
disappointed in you, Rox.
I… had
such high hopes.
Sebastian turns to leave.
ROXIE
Seb, Seb
no! Sebastian!
Sebastian leaves and Roxie rests her head on the table
in despair.
INT. CORRDIDOR – LATE AFTERNOON
Sebastian waits outside Arthur’s maths class
patiently. Arthur comes out and they begin walking down the corridor. They walk
in silence, neither looking at the other until they are nearly at the door.
SEBASTIAN
Arthur?
ARTHUR
Yes?
SEBASTIAN
Can we ever trust her
again?
Roxie? After… after
this?
ARTHUR
I never trusted her
to begin with.
She’s not the sort of
person you
can trust. She’s too
attention seeking.
Arthur starts to ramble on. Sebastian is obviously
trying to work up the courage to say something.
SEBASTIAN
I don’t
agree with what she said!
Arthur and Sebastian stop walking and there is a
stunned silence for a moment.
SEBASTIAN
I mean, about you not
understanding
emotion! I don’t mean
about you
being right or
something! I meant
that I think you do
understand it,
you do, you just
don’t like it or
something like that!
I’m sorry Arthur
I didn’t mean to
cause offence I mean
I was just trying to
say…
Arthur sighs and continues walking, a smile slowly
creeping onto his face. Sebastian follows. As they walk through the door into
the outside world, Arthur slips his hand into Sebastian’s.
Fade to black.
